PROVIDENCE – TD Bank and the Arbor Day Foundation awarded $20,000 to support an urban greening and tree-planting project in Providence.
The “TD Green Streets” grant was awarded to the Providence Department of Parks and Recreation. It’s being managed by the forestry division in partnership with the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program.

Learn MoreThe funds will be used by community members to plan, prepare and plant trees and shrubs along Huntington Avenue, according to a press release.
“We’re delighted that this TD Green Streets funding is allowing us to bring some needed TLC to this low tree-canopied corridor,” said Cassie Tharinger, director of the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program, a nonprofit. “Though it’s not a long stretch of road, Huntington Ave. links and borders so many neighborhoods on the southwest side of the city.”
Volunteers from several community groups are expected to participate in the effort. A second community-planting event is expected to take place in October.
“Planting along Huntington Avenue supports our efforts to increase tree canopy in the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Doug Still, Providence city forester.
