PROVIDENCE – The Total Joint Center at The Miriam Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification for the second time.
The center, which offers total hip, knee and shoulder replacement, underwent a “rigorous on-site review” several months ago, when a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with certification standards and conducted observations and interviews, the hospital said.

The certification is good for two years. The center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval certification numerous times but achieved the “advanced” designation for the first time in 2017, The Miriam spokesman Richard Salit said.
“Maintaining the Gold Seal of Approval is an important achievement for us because it serves as an affirmation that The Miriam Hospital and the Total Joint Center are relentless in their pursuit of excellence, and that translates into the best care possible for our patients,” said Arthur J. Sampson, president of The Miriam.
The Joint Commission is an independent accrediting agency for health care organizations.
“We commend The Total Joint Center for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for orthopedic patients,” said Mark Pelletier, chief operating officer of accreditation and certification operations and chief nursing executive at The Joint Commission.
