Trinity Rep announces 2018-2019 season schedule

PROVIDENCE – Marking its 55th season, the 2018-2019 Trinity Repertory Company schedule will feature a six-play subscription series, a limited run and the 41st annual performance of “A Christmas Carol,” per a Tuesday announcement by the Providence-based theatrical nonprofit.

Commencing on Oct. 4 and running through June 16, 2019, per the organization’s announcement, while the forthcoming season’s shows “vary both in style and when they were written, they all take stories and characters familiar to audiences and re-examine them in new and exciting ways.”

In a statement, Arthur P. Solomon and Sally E. Lapides Artistic Director Curt Columbus said he was driven by how, “in difficult times, we always return to the great stories that people tell to each other, stories that offer hope, that speak to what is truly brilliant within us, as humans, stories that acknowledge the eternal spark of our species.”

The 2018-2019 schedule is as follows:

  • “Pride & Prejudice” (Oct. 4 to Nov. 4, 2018)
  • “black odyssey” (Jan. 3 to Feb. 3, 2019)
  • “Macbeth” (Jan. 31 to March 3, 2019)
  • “The Song of Summer” (March 14 to April 14, 2019)
  • “Little Shop of Horrors” (April 11 to May 12, 2019)
  • “Marisol” (May 16 to June 16, 2019):

The limited engagement production of the 2018-2019 season, “An Iliad,” is written by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare and is based on Homer’s “The Iliad” as translated by Robert Fagles. The plot arc recounts the stories of gods and goddesses, battles, destruction and violence over millennia.

The production will run the week of Feb. 6 to Feb. 10, 2019.

As has come to be a Providence tradition, Trinity Rep. will perform its annual production of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens with original music by Richard Cumming and directed by Mark Valdez. Performances will take place between Nov. 8 and Dec. 30, 2018.

The nonprofits announced season features the work of “at least 11 women and people of color” as playwrights and directors and mirrors an ongoing campaign by the nonprofit to represent more diversity in the shows it picks to perform at the Providence playhouse. The organization said that it expects this number to grow as as more directors and designers are contracted for the season.

Casting announcements will begin later this spring.

The upcoming season is sponsored by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
