PROVIDENCE – Two companies in the Providence metropolitan area were honored as 2019 HIRE Vets Medallion Award winners by the U.S Department of Labor, the department announced Wednesday.
Veterans Assembled Electronics, based in Providence, and Torden LLC, based in New Bedford, were awarded the Gold award for small businesses.

“The recipients of the 2019 HIRE Vets Medallion Awards demonstrated a commitment to hiring veterans and helping them develop meaningful, long-term careers,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia. “From small-town businesses to Fortune 500 companies, these employers understand that veterans are uniquely qualified and dedicated employees who make significant contributions in the workplace.”
Recipients of the award are required to meet what the DOL deems rigorous employment and veteran-integration assistance criteria, including hiring and retention percentages, availability of veteran-specific resources, leadership programming for veterans, dedicated human resources efforts, and/or compensation and tuition assistance programs for veterans.
The two companies were among 427 small companies, nonprofits and corporations honored around the country.
VAe trains service-disabled veterans and non-veteran students for a sustained career as electronics assemblers and technicians via an immersive four- or five-month program.
Torden specializes in national security and intelligence solutions, language solutions and professional training and development, according to the company.
Both companies were founded by service-disabled veterans.
The Medallion awards are either Gold or Platinum in categories for small, medium and large organizations.
