U.S. News ranks The Miriam best hospital in Providence metro

PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital is once again leading the Providence metropolitan area, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospital rankings released Tuesday. 

For the fifth year in a row, the publication ranked The Miriam as the No. 1 hospital in the Providence metro, which includes all of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. In the 2022-23 Best Hospitals ranking, the publication listed the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., as the best in the country, with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston coming in No. 8 nationwide. 

Southcoast Hospitals Group – a system of three partner hospitals, including St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River and Tobey Hospital in Wareham, Mass. – was ranked No. 2 in the Providence metro. The Miriam and the Southcoast Hospital Group were the only two in the Providence metro that were ranked. 

The Miriam, located at 164 Summit Ave. in Providence, was recognized as “high performing” for nine types of procedures and conditions, according to U.S. News & World Report, including heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, heart attack, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement and stroke. However, The Miriam was not ranked among the top 50 in cardio and heart surgery; obstetrics and gynecology; rehabilitation; ear, nose and throat; ophthalmology; psychiatry; or rheumatology.

Southcoast Hospitals Group was recognized as “high performing” for seven types of procedures and conditions, including heart failure, colon cancer surgery, COPD, diabetes, heart attack, kidney failure and stroke.

The 32nd annual rankings were based on a multifaceted comparison of more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide, analyzing 15 different adult health care specialties and 20 medical procedures, the publication said.
