PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital was ranked the No. 1 hospital in Rhode Island and the Providence metropolitan area, according to U.S. News & World Report Tuesday.
The hospital was ranked No. 27 in the United States for urology and was considered “high performing” for five other specialties – diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology and lung surgery. The Miriam Hospital also was ranked “high performing” in five procedures and conditions – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement and knee replacement.

The second-highest ranked hospital in the Providence metro area was Southcoast Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River (Charlton also was ranked the No. 8 hospital in Massachusetts). The hospital earned a high-performance ranking in one adult specialty, and three procedures and conditions. The hospital’s urology specialty was considered high performing this year, and it was recognized for its procedures and conditions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery and heart failure.
No other hospitals in the area were ranked in the report. However, some did earn high-performance rankings in specialties, and procedures and conditions.
- Kent Hospital: Earned high-performance marks for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure
- Rhode Island Hospital: Earned high performance for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure.
- South County Hospital: Earned high performance status for knee replacement procedure
This year, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., ranked No. 1 of all hospitals in the United States, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
In rankings that came out in June, no hospitals in the area earned any recognition in the category of children’s hospitals.
