PROVIDENCE – University Orthopedics welcomed hundreds of families to its new Kettle Point Medical Center Aug. 4 for its 21st annual free Fall Sports Pre-Participation Exams.
The event was the largest to date, as 210 student athletes from elementary school through college attended from communities throughout Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts.
These exams, which are required to participate in fall sports, included a vision check, height, weight, blood pressure, cardio and musculoskeletal exams. Participants were interviewed by a doctor prior to approval. More than 50 staff members from University Orthopedics were on hand to volunteer their Saturday to take part.
Dr. Aristides I. Cruz Jr., a pediatric sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with University Orthopedics, said the complimentary consultations are an excellent opportunity for local youth.
“We donate our time and efforts to the community and we feel like it’s something we benefit from as much as the community benefits from, so it’s a win-win for everybody. We’ll be back again next year and hopefully it continues to grow,” said Cruz.
With more than 40 board-certified, fellowship trained musculoskeletal and sports medicine specialists affiliated with Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, University Orthopedics offers orthopedic care for patients of all ages.
