PROVIDENCE – Dr. Betty R. Vohr, director of the Neonatal Follow-Up Program at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and medical director of the Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Program, has won the Albany Medical College Alumni Association 2018 Distinguished Alumna Award.
The organization honored Vohr for her pioneering work as a clinician and researcher dedicated to improving the lives of high-risk premature infants and infants with hearing loss. The Neonatal Follow-Up Program provides multidisciplinary assessments and clinical management of high-risk infants from birth to 7 years of age. Referrals are accepted from the neonatal intensive care unit, community physicians and early intervention. The Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Program based at Women & Infants became the first public health program of its kind in the United States in 1993. Since that time, RIHAP has screened 99 percent of Rhode Island’s newborn babies (14,000 annually) for hearing loss.

The award honors alumni who earn national recognition for outstanding leadership in health care. Vohr, a professor of pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, is a 1966 graduate of Albany Medical College.
Vohr was national coordinator of follow-up studies for the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network between 1990 and 2016 and has published more than 300 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
The association presented her with the award at Albany Medical College during Reunion Weekend April 27-28 in Albany, N.Y. While there, she also presented the Distinguished Alumna Lecture, “The Power of Language,” which covered her research and clinical work with premature infants and infants with hearing loss.
