PROVIDENCE – The Creative Capital ranked No. 105 of 116 cities in the WalletHub 2018 Hardest-Working Cities in America Monday.
The study measured two factors of work, direct and indirect work factors. Direct factors included the average work week, the employment rate, the share of engaged workers and the amount of idle youth in a city. Indirect factors included a city’s average commute time, share of workers with multiple jobs, the annual volunteer hours per resident and the average leisure time spent per day. The study included the 116 largest cities in the United States.

San Francisco ranked No. 1 in the study, followed by Freemont, Calif., Jersey City, N.J., and Washington, D.C., Boston ranked No. 7 in the study. Columbia, S.C., ranked last in the study.
Providence ranked No. 83 for direct factors. The Providence worker’s average work week was measured at 22.6 hours per week, ranking No. 68 of the cities included in the survey. The city’s employment rate was 93.49 which ranked No. 106 in the study. The city’s engaged share of engaged workers also ranked poorly at 34 percent, which placed the city at No. 94 in the study.
Providence ranked well for the idle youth rate, which accounts for unemployed youth from age 16 to 24. At unemployment of 9.7 percent, the city placed No. 15 in the nation.
Providence ranked last among all cities in the study for indirect work factors.
The Creative Capital ranked last in the study for most average leisure time spent per day at 384 minutes per household.
It was not the heaviest weighted metric, but it is worth noting that Providence also ranked No. 115 for commute time at an average of 36 minutes, meaning that workers in the study had the second-shortest commute time of any city in the survey.
The city also ranked No. 27 for share of workers with multiple jobs at 5.6 percent.
