PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island residents have the 13th-highest property tax burden in the nation, according to WalletHub. The personal finance website compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia by using U.S. Census Bureau data to determine which states had the highest and lowest property and car taxes. Rhode Island is among 25 states in the nation that doesn’t have a car tax, according to the study. To determine property tax burden, Researchers divided the “median real estate tax payment” by the median home price in each state. They then used the resulting rates to obtain the dollar amount paid as real estate tax on a house worth $332,700, the median value for a home in the U.S. as of 2024, according to the Census Bureau. According to the report, Rhode Islanders pay $4,900 annually in real estate taxes on the state’s median home value of $404,200. On a $333,700 home, the median price in the U.S. in 2024, property taxes in Rhode Island would be $4,033 annually. In 2025, WalletHub listed Rhode Island’s property tax burden the 11th highest in the nation. New Jersey is the highest in the nation, according to WalletHub. A home at that state’s median price of $454,400 would cost $9,500 in taxes annually. A New Jersey home at the nation’s median price of $333,700 is taxed at $7,022 annually. Illinois, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York rounded out the top five. Hawaii has the lowest property tax burden in the nation, according to WalletHub. In that state, the median home price of $839,100 costs $2,239 in property taxes annually. The U.S. median price of $333,700 would cost $888 annually. Massachusetts has the 15th-highest property tax burden, according to WalletHub. The median home price in the commonwealth of $563,100 is taxed $5,992 annually.
