PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Aeronautica Windpower LLC, a wind turbine manufacturer that has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with a Denmark-based windpower company, has been poking around Rhode Island, looking for a spot to build a new manufacturing facility.
The company, which will keep its Plymouth headquarters and refurbishing facility, is also considering locations in southeastern Massachusetts. In Rhode Island, the company has identified potential sites in North Kingstown’s Quonset Business Park and in Tiverton’s Eco Park, according to a spokesman.

Aeronautica Director of Marketing and Sales Brian D. Kuhn said in a statement that the Northeast has potential as a large market for commercial turbines. “Shipping costs into the area are high and lead times are long,” he said. “And new energy bills coming around the country continue to make wind power very attractive; we think we are seeing the formation of a perfect storm for this product.”
Aeronautica Windpower has recently signed a deal with Denmark’s Norwin A/S to start production of Norwin’s 225 kW and 750 kW turbines in the United States. Aeronautica Windpower said the new production facility will likely employ at least 80 workers.
Norwin’s turbine designs already have been licensed in China, India and throughout Europe. In a statement, Norwin spokesman Ole Sangill said the company’s turbines are “proven” – they’ve been building them since the 1980s – and will fit well into the North American markets. “As wind power continues to develop in this region of the world, we believe we have just the right turbines for thousands of commercial, industrial and municipal applications,” he said.
