Winners of 11th annual Rhody Awards announced

PROVIDENCE – The winners of the 11th annual Rhody Awards for Historic Preservation were announced Friday.

The awardees are selected by Preserve Rhode Island and the R.I. Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission to honor individuals, organizations and projects for their role in the preservation of historic Rhode Island locales.

The awardees will be honored at an event at Aldrich Mansion in Warwick Oct. 6.

This year’s award winners are:

  • Betty and Carlo Mencucci: The Antoinette F. Downing Volunteer Service Award for their conservation of historic gravestones.
  • Paul F. Miller: The Frederick C. Williamson Professional Leadership Award for “decades of service to Newport as a curator and public scholar of decorative arts, historic architecture and social history.”
  • Historic Wickford Markers Project: The Education Award, honoring the project’s nine interpretive signs that explore the village’s history.
  • Pawtuxet Rangers: The Education Award for its work interpreting Rhode Island’s military and community history and stewardship of the organization’s armory.
  • International Tennis Hall of Fame: The Stewardship Award for its historic preservation at Newport Casino.
  • Martha Werenfels and Frank Satterthwaite: The Historic Homeowner Award for their restoration of the Eudora Beynon and Ada Puffer House & Carriage House in Cranston.
  • Cheryl Hackett and John Grosvenor: The Historic Homeowner Award for the restoration of the Restmere villa in Middletown.
  • The Coletta Group: The Historic Preservation Project Award for the restoration of commercial and residential spaces in the Avis Block in North Kingstown.
  • Sussy DeLeon and Stephen Biernacki: The Historic Preservation Project Award for the restoration of the Ballou House in Providence for a mix of uses.
  • Robert Terino, Anthony Santoro and John Santoro: The Historic Preservation Project Award for the conversion of the Lymansville Company Mill in North Providence into Lofts at Lyman Mill.
