Women in Tech event to focus on professional advancement May 14

PROVIDENCE – Tech Collective will host the Women in Technology event “The Future of Women in Tech: Paying it Forward” from 4-6 p.m. on May 14.

With a goal of creating opportunities in growth, professional advancement and business solutions, the event features speaker Desiree Forsythe of CS4RI (Computer Science for Rhode Island), a student panel, and keynote speaker Siu-Li Khoe, Rhode Island Virtual Reality executive director.

Forsythe, education and outreach coordinator for the University of Rhode Island’s Computer Science Department, has a background in genetics, data analysis, policy and education. She began work with the CS4RI team in the summer of 2016. The group combines national initiatives with local expertise to increase computer science learning opportunities.

The student panel is made up of Elaine Jiang of Brown University; Paula Tobon, a graduate of The Institute of Entrepreneurship & Leadership; incoming University of Rhode Island student Destiny Manston; and Iliany Garcia Martinez, a junior at Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH). The students will discuss their stories.

Khoe will present a talk on the importance of giving back in the industry, according to a news release. She is one of the founders of RIVR and its executive director.

Tech Collective is located at 188 Valley St. in Providence. Tickets are free for students who register using a school email address; it is $15 plus a $2.55 fee for general admission.
