Woonsocket Housing Authority receives $1M to address lead paint hazards

WOONSOCKET – The Woonsocket Housing Authority was awarded $1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to identify and reduce lead-based paint hazards, the department announced Tuesday.

The funding is part of a national $27.8 million awarded to public-housing agencies nationwide from the HUD’s Housing Capital Fund.

“This funding is critical in helping to protect Rhode Island families from the dangers of lead,” said David Tille, HUD New England regional administrator, in a statement.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many public-housing units the $1 million grant is expected to impact. WHA wasn’t immediately available for comment. Nationwide, the grants will impact 2,800 units, HUD said.
