PROVIDENCE – More than 4,000 workers across the state will benefit from the 69 grants, totaling about $1.3 million, announced this week by the Governor’s Workforce Board. The grants ranged from $585 to the maximum $50,000.
“Through the Comprehensive Worker Training Grants, the Governor’s Workforce Board helps companies invest in their own workforce,” said Joseph MarcAurele, the board’s chairman and the president of Citizens Bank of Rhode Island. “Our matching grant policy means that companies can leverage their own budget to attain greater levels of training than they could afford alone.”

Forty-nine of the 69 businesses receiving grants are in high-wage industries such as information, finance and insurance, wholesale trade, scientific and business services, construction and manufacturing, the board said. Improving worker training to make Rhode Island more attractive to such businesses is among the board’s economic-development goals.
“By targeting high-wage industries, the work force board is making a strategic investment in the long-term growth of Rhode Island,” said Adelita S. Orefice, the board’s executive director and the director of the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.
Money for the program comes from the employer-financed R.I. Job Development Fund; employers must pay into the fund to be eligible for the grants.
Bristol County employers received three grants, totaling $27,891; Kent County, 16 grants totaling $365,528; Newport County, nine grants totaling $141,533l; Washington County, four grants totaling $93,301; and Providence County, 37 grants totaling $670,327, including 15 northern Rhode Island grants amounting to a combined $282,103.
