PROVIDENCE – Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts International issued a joint statement Friday that said the companies are in preliminary conversations about the potential of a deal that would have Wynn sell the newly built Encore Boston Harbor casino and hotel in Everett, Mass., to MGM.
MGM already owns and operates the MGM Springfield in south central Massachusetts. Regulators approved Wynn Resorts’ license for Encore last month following an investigation of the company’s handling of a sex scandal involving company founder Steve Wynn.
The Encore property is scheduled to open in June.
The talks are “very preliminary and of the nature that publicly traded corporations like ours often engage in, and in fact when opportunities such as this are presented, we are required to explore,” the companies said.
If Encore Boston Harbor were to be sold, the companies said, it would not impact jobs at the facilities or the opening of the casino and hotel.
“We cannot say today where these conversations will land,” the statement continued, “however we can reaffirm our commitment to the communities where we operate today.”
