YWCA Rhode Island celebrates 150 years

PROVIDENCE – The public is invited to a reception celebrating the YWCA Rhode Island’s 150th anniversary serving the local community, its statewide contributions and goals for the future through work done at its Woonsocket, Central Falls, Providence and Coventry locations.

In prepared remarks, Deborah Perry, YWCA Rhode Island president and CEO, said: “As we celebrate our past, we are focused on building the future.”

Dating back to 1867, Perry manages the third-oldest YWCA in the nation, which was originally founded by seven women who were concerned about providing shelter for women relocating to Providence while seeking work opportunities.

Sen. Donna Nesselbush, D-Pawtucket, and Providence City Councilwoman Sabina Matos will serve as honorary chairs of the celebration, which will take place Monday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center and Gardens in Providence. Hors d’oeuvres and sweets will be served while a silent auction is held, allowing guests time for networking and to peruse a walking path highlighting accomplishments in the organization’s history.
