Brown, URI make Top 500 world universities list

PROVIDENCE – Brown University is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world, according to the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The ranking of the top 500 schools around the globe includes Brown at No. 75, in a tie with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Ranked between Nos. 401 and 500, without a definitive numeric ranking, is the University of Rhode Island. No other Rhode Island or southeastern Massachusetts schools are listed.

The list is compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The center ranks 1,200 universities and publishes the top 500.

Harvard University held steady with the ranking of first in the world for the 13th year. Other Top 10 universities in order are: Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, University of Chicago and University of Oxford.

According to the ranking, which has been publishing an annual Top 500 universities since 2003, six objective indicators are used to rank the world’s universities. They include: the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; and the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science.

Also referenced are the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index and per capita performance.
