WASHINGTON – The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released data on arts and culture employment Wednesday showing that employment in the sector grew 1.26 percent in 2014 across the nation, one year after growing 1.3 percent.
Rhode Island ranked 42nd among all states in arts and cultural employment growth from 2013 to 2014, as the Ocean State actually saw the number of people employed in the sector decline 1.52 percent. In fact, from 2002 through 2014, the number of people employed in arts and cultural businesses fell each year. Across the United States, employment in the sector was not much better, although it did show growth in each of the last three years.

Arts and cultural industries in Rhode Island employ 3.7 percent of the workforce, 17,882 jobs, and generate $1 billion in compensation, which accounts for 3.6 percent of Rhode Island’s total compensation. Rhode Island ranks 41st in arts and culture production compensation and 31st among for arts and culture compensation growth, which grew 2.59 percent in 2014 compared with the national average growth of 4.96 percent.
Overall information services and design services were leading contributors to the arts and culture employment growth. According to the BEA, arts and cultural economic activity accounted for 4.2 percent of the gross domestic product, or $729.6 billion, while the sector employed 4.8 million workers nationally.
