DARTMOUTH – After months of organizing and recruiting, a new branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been established by students at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and was approved by the organization’s board of directors in late April.
In prepared remarks, Bruce Rose, president of the New Bedford NAACP branch, said he was proud of the students’ accomplishment and looked forward to “working with the chapter in carrying out our mutual objectives of ensuring equality of rights of all persons and combating racial discrimination.”

In the past month, the student-led chapter has hosted an information mixer, organized a voter registration drive, planned and participated in Black History Month events and presented a gospel choir performance. The group plans to hold biweekly meetings to further develop a civil rights advocacy agenda in conjunction with the two local New Bedford NAACP branches.
According to the organization’s bylaws, university-affiliated branches must “keep the public aware of the adverse effects of discrimination; … inform students of the problems affecting African-Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities; to advance the economic, education, social and political status of African-Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities and their harmonious cooperation with other peoples; … and to develop effective leadership.”
The university-based chapter will work with the other two New Bedford-based branches in conducting civil rights advocacy work in the area.
