PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked No. 19 in the nation for average weekly wage in the first quarter of 2017, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Wednesday.
The average weekly wage for the first quarter of 2017 in the Ocean State was $1,055, a 7.2 percent increase year over year.

Of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., the District of Colombia ranked No. 1 with an average weekly wage of $1,885. New York ranked No. 2 with an average weekly wage of $1,541 and Massachusetts ranked No. 3 in the nation with an average weekly wage of $1,428 for the first quarter of 2017.
Of the New England states, Maine reported the lowest average weekly wage of $860, ranking eighth lowest in the nation for average weekly wage for the first quarter of 2017. Mississippi reported the lowest weekly wage at $750.
The average weekly wage for the first quarter of 2017 in the United States was $1,111, an increase of 6.6 percent year over year.
New England Q1 average weekly wage data:
Massachusetts: No. 3 – $1,428, a 7.7 percent increase year over year.
Connecticut: No. 4 – $1,417, a 4 percent increase year over year.
New Hampshire: No. 16 – $1,070, a 7.3 percent increase year over year.
Rhode Island: No. 19 – $1,055, a 7.2 percent increase year over year.
Vermont: No. 37 – $889, a 6.7 percent increase year over year.
Maine: No. 44 – $860, a 7.2 percent increase year over year.
Providence County:
The report also contained data on Providence County for both March and the first quarter of 2017. The county reported having 18,100 establishments in the first quarter. In March, those establishments employed 281,500 workers.
The average weekly wage in Providence County for the first quarter was slightly above the state average at $1,115. The weekly wage in Providence County rose 7.6 percent year over year, which ranked No. 81 in a survey of 347 of the largest counties in the nation.
