
WARWICK – The seventh annual Frozen Clam Dip and Obstaplunge took place on New Year’s Day at Goddard Memorial State Park Beach, with participants traversing a half-mile shoreline obstacle course and raising $6,000 in proceeds for Mentor Rhode Island – a nonprofit dedicated to increasing mentoring outlets for local youth.
The record-breaking low temperatures this month postponed the plunge portion of the event, when participants dive into Narragansett Bay, to Jan. 28 at noon.

His seventh year hosting the event, founder and president of Warwick-based Laid-back Fitness, Ryan McGowan, said in a statement: “Mental strength and resilience are essential to achieving goals beyond our comfort zones, at the gym, at work or in life. Our hope is to instill a similar mindset in the local youth, so that they may feel inspired and equipped to conquer life’s challenges.”
McGowan, who has served as a Mentor Rhode Island mentor since 2011, has led the event to raise more than $41,000 in its six-year history.
