NEWPORT – Ten employees of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport have won the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers for the Year 2017 Award.
Winners include two individual employees and eight employees as participants on three winning teams.

Individual employee winners include Jesse Belden, a research scientist in the Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles and Defensive Systems Department, who received the Emergent Scientist Investigator Award, and David F. Rivera of the Undersea Warfare Electromagnetic Systems Department, who received the Individual Engineer Award.
The NUWC Division Newport Topside Team members include Peter Bodycoat from the Sensors and Sonar Systems Department; Dan Savaria and Patrick Ryll from the Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department; and Zachary Sawyer and Keith Wichowski with the Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles and Defensive Systems Department.
Richard Medley, an engineer in the Undersea Warfare Mission Engineering and Analysis Department, contributed to the success of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic Integration & Interoperability Team.
The Office of Naval Research Innovative Naval Prototype, Nemesis Engineering Leadership Team, demonstrated synchronized electromagnetic maneuver warfare effects at sea. James Gannon and Joseph Muhitch from the Sensors and Sonar Systems Department were key to the team’s efforts, according to NUWC Division Newport.
Award winners were honored at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on June 29.
