CUMBERLAND – An invitation-only Manufacturing Days event for the next generation of woodworkers and machinery technicians was held Nov. 5 at Herrick & White Architectural Woodworkers in Cumberland.
The event, which was presented by Skills for Rhode Island’s Future and the Wood Machinery Industry Association, was set up to help inspire young people to enter the field of millwork, cabinetry and furniture, according to a news release.

Chris Hofmann of WMIA’s education committee and U.S. Lamello, product manager at Colonial Saw in Kingston, Mass., came up with the idea for the event.
Set up as a trade show, WMIA invited member companies to represent the industry to local vocational students interested in learning about carpentry, design or wood-manufacturing. Plant tours, prize giveaways and demonstrations took place for about 80 students from the following schools: Lincoln High School, Woonsocket Area Career & Technical Center, Coventry High School and Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School in Easton.
It was the first of what organizers hope will be a regular event.
