The Not-for-profit Committee of the Rhode Island Society of CPAs will be leading a seminar on Thursday, October 22nd, at the Marriott Providence, entitled The Building Blocks of Success: A Guide for Not-for-Profit Directors and Board Members. The seminar is targeted to Executive Directors and board members of not-for-profit organizations in Rhode Island. The objective is to explore, with those charged with governance, their fiduciary and fiscal responsibilities in today’s ever-more compliance-oriented and economically precarious environment. The session will help board members and Executive Directors to better understand and navigate the financial and regulatory challenges they are facing every day.
The seminar will address basic and fundamental matters like how to read and understand financial statements, tax returns and other documents; what are the roles and responsibilities of the Board; what to look for in their organization’s internally generated statements and budgets; and what to (realistically) expect from their finance department. The goal is to be able to ascertain the financial health of the organization by knowing what to look for and what questions to ask. In this general session, the presenters will also touch upon the impact of the current economic climate and the new UPMIFA regulations in Rhode Island and how those will factors will impact endowments and their draws.

The remainder of the program will be split into two panels. The first panel, the “Funders Panel,” will have representatives from the RI Foundation, the state and a fundraising director to give an overview of funding trends, including changes in granting activities, the future of state funding, and the role of the board in fundraising.
The second panel will look at fundraising from the other point of view, with speakers from the United Way, the RI Foundation, and a not-for-profit organization. This panel will look at the movement toward collaborations and affiliations in the not-for-profit world and how to assess whether this might be an appropriate course. It will also give some practical examples of best practices and challenges associated with collaborations and affiliations.
Both panels will have a rich variety of presenters addressing their own areas of expertise. The panel discussions will include Tony Maione, President of the United Way Rhode Island, Owen Heleen, VP of Grant Programs for The Rhode Island Foundation, and Margaret Holland McDuff of Family Service of RI, as well as representatives from Meeting Street and the State’s Budget Office.
The charge is $40 per organization with unlimited numbers of attendees per organization.
