PROVIDENCE – U.S. News & World Report has unranked Johnson & Wales University’s Providence campus from its 2019 college rankings for incorrectly reporting financial expenditure data for several years, the organization announced last week.
The university was one of five schools unranked this year for misreporting, which resulted in numerical rankings higher than would have been earned if information was accurate.

The school will be able to be included in 2020 rankings. Unranked schools are not included in U.S. News’ Best Value Schools, A-plus Schools for B Students, Top Public Schools and Best Colleges for Veterans rankings.
The unranking comes after Johnson & Wales self-reported to U.S. News that it had been misreporting financial spending for its Providence campus. For every $100 in financial expenditure it reported, it would have actually spent $62. The school had been reporting financial expenditures for all of JWU schools, not just the Providence campus.
Financial resources expenditures per student accounts for 10% of the Best Colleges ranking, U.S. News said.
U.S. News will require the school to certify the accuracy of submissions for the next three years.
The other schools unranked this year were University of California, Berkeley; Scripps College; Mars Hill University; and the University of North Carolina, Pembroke.
