R.I. foreclosures drop 21%

PROVIDENCE – Foreclosure filings in Rhode Island dropped 21 percent in October compared with the same month a year earlier, RealtyTrac said Thursday.

Including default notices, scheduled auction and bank repossessions, there were 535 total filings in October, down from 676 in October 2010, the California-based real estate tracking firm said.

In Bristol County, Mass., foreclosure filings were down by more than half in October, to 288 filings, from the same time last year, when there were 616 filings.

Statewide, in Massachusetts, foreclosure filings were down 48 percent year-over-year in October.

Nationally, RealtyTrac reported foreclosures increasing from September to October, but well down from where they were a year ago.
