PROVIDENCE – Dorcas Place Adult & Family Learning Center has a new leader at its helm, after hiring Carol Holmquist as the new president and CEO, the education agency announced on Wednesday.
Holmquist will oversee the agency’s $3.2 million budget and 48 employees. As of July 1, Holmquist is the agency’s fourth president in its 30-year history. Her predecessor, Brenda Dann-Messier, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October 2009 to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education for the U.S. Dept. of Education.

“Carol Holmquist brings new leadership to our community, remarkable enthusiasm and a distinguished history of nonprofit service and experience in the field of adult education and human service,” said Dorcas Place board chair Jose Valerio.
Holmquist’s previous roles include executive director of the adult literacy organization The Read Center in Richmond, Va., and president of the Virginia Literacy Leadership Council. Her other nonprofit experiences includes positions as president and CEO of the Easter Seal Society of Maryland Inc., executive director of Family Life Center in Columbia, Md., and executive director of H.E.A.L., an ecumenical collaboration serving inner-city Baltimore.
Since 1992, Holmquist has offered her consulting services for organizational management, fund-raising and marketing through her practice Holmquist & Associates.
Dorcas Place’s new leader obtained her B.A. from George Mason University and her M.A. in Religion from Lutheran Theological Seminary.
The announcement came ahead of the National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, observed from Sept. 13 to 17. Dorcas Place provides more than 1,000 adults with adult education and literacy classes annually, the organization noted.
