TAUNTON – Kopin Corp. said last week it has achieved what it called “a breakthrough in further shrinking the size of its color displays” that allows it to nearly halve the size of its products.
The company said it reduced the size of the display’s color dots to 2.9 x 8.7 micrometers (µm) from their previous size, 3.75 x 11.25 µm. The result is a full-color VGA display – meaning a display with a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels – that is 0.27” diagonally in size.

Kopin heralded the product as “by far the smallest VGA color-filter liquid crystal display (LCD) in the world.”
The company said the new super-tiny color dots would allow SVGA (800 x 600 pixels) displays 0.34” diagonally in size; XGA (1024 x 768) displays 0.44” diagonally in size; and SXGA (1280 x 1024) displays 0.56” diagonally in size. Kopin says it wants to create a 2048 x 2048 display that is smaller than a postage stamp.
“Our new VGA display with the smallest color dot in the industry is a major milestone for Kopin’s technology roadmap to provide more compact, higher resolution and lower power consumption displays,” Dr. Boryeu Tsaur, Kopin’s executive vice president and general manager of its display business unit.
“This exciting achievement is enabled by our innovative process improvements and unique pixel design, and results in an additional 40 percent reduction in display size,” Tsaur said.
Dr. John C.C. Fan, Kopin’s president and CEO, added that the “ultra-compact displays should be ideal for high-end digital still cameras requiring high-resolution electronic viewfinders.”
