Dunkin’ Donuts franchise owners of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., recently donated $55,512 to Special Olympics Rhode Island and Special Olympics Massachusetts.
The donation came from the restaurant chain’s “Pound of Coffee” promotion in which franchisees pledged 25 cents for every one-pound package of coffee sold at the shops in November and December 2008.
On hand to present the check to Special Olympic athlete Michael Lucca was Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Rob Batista, who helped raise $498 at his shop at 1242 Ten Rod Road in North Kingstown.
“For nearly 20 years, our relationship with the Special Olympics has evolved to become a cornerstone of our community partnership program, and we are continually inspired by every Special Olympic athlete, coach and volunteer,” said Batista. “We are especially thankful to our loyal customers, who despite these difficult times, were instrumental in making this contribution possible,” he said.
Dunkin’ Donuts has supported the Special Olympics in endeavors, including the annual area winter and summer games, the annual Sports Celebrity Carnival and the Special Olympics Charity Auction, since 1988. Dunkin’ Donuts is also the premier sponsor of Special Olympics Rhode Island Team USA, which competes in national and world games. n
