AAA: R.I. gas prices down 1 cent

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices at Rhode Island stations dropped 1 cent over the past week, in their fifth consecutive week of little or no movement, AAA Southern New England reported today.
AAA’s Dec. 24 survey of local stations found self-service regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.069 per gallon.
Nationwide, the average price for self-serve unleaded regular gas declined 2 cents over the past week to $2.979, or 9 cents per gallon less than the average price this week in the Ocean State.
The range in prices for self-service regular at local stations was 20 cents, from a low of $2.999 to a high of $3.199, the nonprofit auto club found.
During the holiday season, AAA estimates 65.2 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 2006 holiday season.
About 53 million – 83 percent of the total – expect to travel by motor vehicle, a 0.9-percent increase from last year. The number planning to travel by air is down 0.3 percent from last year at 8.9 million, or 13.7 percent of the total. The remaining 3.3 million long-distance holiday travelers expect to travel by train, bus or other method.
