PROVIDENCE – Family Service of Rhode Island has named Mayor David N. Cicilline to receive this year’s Brighter Futures Award. The award is presented annually to an individual or organization making an outstanding contribution to the well-being of children in the state.
“Mayor Cicilline has become a state and even a national leader on issues affecting children and their families,” said Margaret Holland McDuff, the nonprofit’s CEO.

In particular, she said, “He has placed a strong emphasis on after-school programming,” establishing the Providence After School Alliance in partnership with the Wallace Foundation, Bank of America, the Education Partnership and other sponsors. “He also has been extremely supportive of Family Service of Rhode Island’s partnership with the Providence police to assist children traumatized by violence,” she said.
The mayor previously has been honored by the National League of Cities’ After School Alliance and been named chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Committee on Children, Health and Human Services.
“The education and healthy development of our children must be our highest priority,” Cicilline said in a statement. “We need to guarantee every child the opportunity for an excellent education and a safe, caring, enriching environment.”
Previous recipients of the Brighter Futures award include the Boston Red Sox, Pawtucket Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation, and Col. Dean Esserman, the police chief in Providence.
The 2007 Brighter Futures Award will be presented Oct. 23, during a luncheon at the R.I. Convention Center in Providence.
