PROVIDENCE – Brendan P. Doherty of Cumberland has been named to lead the R.I. State Police, starting early next month. He succeeds Co. Steven Parè, who retired in February.
Doherty, the director of public safety at Roger Williams University since 2004, had served as Parè’s second in command before retiring from the State Police as a major.

“As a 24-year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police, Brendan Doherty has the respect of the citizens of Rhode Island and the men and women who make up our state police force,” Gov. Donald L. Carcieri said. “He rose through the ranks … and he has the depth of knowledge, the extensive professional experience, and the training to serve as superintendent.”
This was not the first time he had called on Doherty, the governor noted. “When reports of mismanagement at Beacon Mutual Insurance Co. surfaced, I asked Brendan Doherty to serve on its board … He was someone that I could count on to ask the tough questions and make the right decisions,” Carcieri said.
Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch praised the governor’s selection, saying Doherty’s record speaks for itself.
Doherty joined the State Police in 1980. In 1986, he was assigned to the intelligence unit of the detective bureau. In 1997, he was placed in command of the financial crimes unit, where he investigated financial crimes and public corruption and launched a new cyber-crimes unit. In 1999, he was appointed detective commander, in charge of the entire detective bureau.
