PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Foundation has named violist and music educator Consuelo Sherba to receive one of two 2007 Pawtucket Foundation Persons of the Year Award.
She is being recognized for her work with students at the Rhode Island Philharmonic’s Music School, in various ensembles and outreach programs including the award-winning Creative Communities collaboration with the Pawtucket Housing Authority, the foundation said. She also teaches in the applied music program at Brown University.
Sherba is a founder and co-artistic director of Aurea, an ensemble dedicated to the melding of music and the spoken word, with which she has participated in several urban high school residency programs.
She has performed across the nation and in Sweden, France, England and Brazil with the Charleston String Quartet and in the Sherba Duo with her husband, Charles Sherba, a violinist.
She also performs with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Vermont Symphony, New Hampshire Symphony, at the Mondanock Music Festival and as principal violist in the Simon Sinfonietta, and has performed with a number of other orchestras as well as at festivals including the Grand Teton, Aspen, Colorado Music Festival and Brazil’s Carvalho Festival.
“She dedicates much of her life to sharing her expertise and enthusiasm for music with students, and more specifically, with aspiring musicians in Rhode Island,” the foundation said in its announcement.
Consuelo Sherba shares this year’s Persons of the Year honors with Pawtucket photographer and entrepreneur Patricia S. Zacks, the president of the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative. Additional information is available atwww.pawtucketfoundation.org.
