NEWPORT – An architecture firm garnered top awards for its exterior renovation of a home along Newport’s Cliff Walk.
A4 Architecture Inc. last week received the “Best Exterior Makeover” distinction from the Dream Home Awards, which included entries from all 50 states. The firm’s architects radically changed the look of a 1950s cape by eliminating a boxy addition and adding two gable dormers on each end. The firm also arranged its plans to keep the budget low and allow the owners to stay in the house while work was under way.
“These constraints actually led to the solution: to maintain the main existing house and replace the sun room and a 1970s addition with gambrel roofed ‘book-end’ additions,” Ross Sinclair Cann, the founding principal of the company said. “This greatly reduced construction costs. [Also,] the main building became the connector between the two visually dominant additions. We were very pleased with the tremendous transformation that we were able to achieve on this project, particularly in relation to the budget available.”
