PROVIDENCE – “There’s more relief at the pump for Ocean State drivers: Gasoline prices in Rhode Island tumbled” for the fourth week in a row, AAA Southeastern New England said today in its weekly fuel price report.

AAA’s Aug. 4 survey found the average self-service price for regular unleaded gasoline at Ocean State stations was $3.869 per gallon, down 9 cents from the survey a week ago, 20 cents over the past two weeks and 24 cents from its July 7 average of $4.109 per gallon. But it remained 73 cents above the local price at the beginning of the year and $1 higher than a year ago, when the average local self-serve price was $2.869.

The nationwide average for self-serve regular retreated 7 cents over the past week to $3.88, or 22 cents below the July 7 high of $4.10 per gallon, AAA said.

Meanwhile, the price range for self-serve regular at local stations narrowed to 31 cents, from a low of $3.699 to a high of $4.009. Similar ranges were seen for other grades of gasoline, which had average self-serve prices of $4.019 for midgrade unleaded (down 9 cents over the past week); $4.139 for premium (down 7 cents); and $4.819 for diesel (down 3 cents).
