AAA: R.I. gas prices near $3/gallon

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in Rhode Island have risen for the 12th consecutive week and are nearing $3 per gallon, according to AAA Southern New England.

Self-service, unleaded regular gas averaged $2.97 per gallon in the nonprofit auto club’s May 7 survey, 8 cents more than last week and 74 cents more than the Feb. 19 average of $2.239. A year ago, the average price was $2.919.
The range in prices for unleaded regular in this week’s survey was 22 cents, from $2.859 to $3.079. Wider ranges were seen for other grades.
Average prices this week for other grades of fuel were $3.089 for midgrade unleaded, $3.209 for premium unleaded and $2.939 for diesel.
