NEW YORK – Accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted on charges of using weapons of mass destruction and killing four people, including a campus police officer, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston said.
U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz and Middlesex County District Attorney Marian T. Ryan will hold a press conference today to announce state and federal indictments against Tsarnaev, 19, according to an emailed statement from Ortiz’s office.
Tsarnaev, who has already been charged in a federal complaint, is accused of carrying out the April 15 attack that killed three and injured 260 with his brother Tamerlan, 26, who died after a shootout with police. The grand jury indictment adds charges and further details of his alleged actions.
The 30-count federal indictment also charges Tsarnaev with the shooting death of Sean Collier, a 26-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, whose killing on April 18 set off an overnight chase that led to the capture of the bombing suspect.
Seventeen of the counts in the indictment carry possible death sentences, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Tsarnaev’s arraignment is scheduled for July 10 in Boston, according to the statement.
