NEW BEDFORD – Construction crews broke ground yesterday on what will be the first hotel located in downtown New Bedford in four decades, The Standard-Times reported.
Lafrance Hospitality Co., a Westport-based developer, plans to spend $12.5 million on the new five-story, 106-room Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott hotel, the paper said. It will be located on MacArthur Drive, across from Waterfront Grille along the city’s waterfront.

When it opens, the Fairfield Inn will be the first downtown hotel since the New Bedford Hotel closed in 1969. A company executive told The Standard-Times the goal is to have it open early next summer, with separate conference facilities opening in fall 2010.
New Bedford officials have long argued that the city needs a downtown hotel to house tourists and boost economic development.
