PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island construction employment increased 1.1 percent year over year in April, an increase of 200 jobs to 18,500, seasonally adjusted, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Friday.
The Ocean State construction-employment growth rate ranked No. 36 in the nation and No. 5 in New England.

Massachusetts and New Hampshire tied to rank No. 1 in the region, with a 6.1 percent increase year over year, accounting for an addition of 9,100 jobs in Massachusetts and 1,600 jobs in New Hampshire. Both states ranked No. 11 in the nation.
Maine ranked No. 3 in the region, No. 29 nationally, with 2.2 percent year-over-year growth. Connecticut ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 30 in the country, with 2.1 percent growth year over year.
Vermont had the lowest-ranked construction-employment change year over year in the region, falling 0.6 percent, ranking No. 42 in the U.S.
West Virginia had the highest construction-employment growth rate in the country in April, increasing 11.6 percent year over year. North Dakota had the sharpest decline at 17 percent for the year. California had the largest nominal construction-employment growth in the nation year over year, increasing 59,500 jobs.
Month over month, Rhode Island construction employment declined 200 jobs in April, ranking No. 45 in the country.
