APC to post full power usage, efficiency data

WEST KINGSTON – APC has begun posting electrical-efficiency and power-consumption data to the product information for its enterprise power and cooling products on its U.S. site, www.APC.com.
Data already have been added to the site’s “technical specifications” listings for such popular products as APC’s single-phase and three-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), its power-distribution units, and InRow cooling solutions, the company said. Eventually, APC intends to publish data for all its products while expanding the program to other countries, as well.
At present, the company noted, manufacturers generally do not provide detailed efficiency data for the entire operating range of each product. Instead, they provide customers with data for one or a few operating points – or no public data at all.
“APC feels passionately about providing accurate data on the actual electrical efficiency of its products to customers and others, to help simplify the process of determining overall system efficiency,” Neil Rasmussen, senior vice president of innovation at APC, said in the June 2 announcement. “For example, for devices that transform or process energy, we will provide a graphical representation of the efficiency or loss performance as a function of rated load across the product’s operating range.”
The charts and other data are posted “in a consistent format that allows data-center designers and others to combine the component efficiencies to predict the performance of an overall system,” the company said, adding: “APC believes it is the first company in the critical power and cooling services industry to offer full and complete electrical-efficiency product data in a standard format.”
APC by Schneider Electric – formally, American Power Conversion Corp. – is a member with MGE UPS Systems of the $3.5 billion Critical Power and Cooling System business unit of Rueil-Malmaison, France-based Schneider Electric (Paris: SU.PA).
