Arcade lofts lauded

PROVIDENCE – The Micro Lofts at the Arcade Providence have received the 2015 Merit Award for Global Excellence from The Congress for the New Urbanism. The group, which promotes walkable, mixed-use development of neighborhoods, bestowed the award at its annual meeting in Dallas.
Built in 1828, the Arcade building was designed by Russell Warren and James Bucklin as the first indoor shopping mall in the U.S. It is a Greek Revival building with ionic columns and granite, iron and marble features. After being shuttered in 2008, the building was named by the Providence Preservation Society as among the city’s 10 most endangered properties.
Northeast Collaborative Architects worked with Evan Granoff of 130 Westminster Street Associates to design the 48 micro lofts and 17 micro retail spaces for the building.
