The new pedestrian bridge’s steel frame is close to fully spanning the Providence River, as construction workers continue building the new bridge by utilizing the existing stone piers from the old Interstate 195 corridor as its foundation. Work on the $21.9 million project began in fall 2016 and is expected to finish by next summer. The project was supposed to wrap up by this fall, however it was delayed due to problems with steel fabrication. Daniel O’Connell’s Sons is the project’s general contractor and Inform Studios is the architect. The bridge’s length will be 450 feet, and the width will vary between 15 feet and 60 feet. It will have two decks, with the upper main deck being about 10,000 square feet in size, while the lower deck – built lower toward the river – will be about 1,500 square feet. / COURTESY R.I.
