The new pedestrian bridge, designed by BuroHappold Engineering, will link new walkways and new parks to be built on both the river’s east and west sides. It will also connect with the existing Providence Riverwalk system and the new economic-development opportunities in the city’s Interstate 195 Redevelopment District, including the Wexford Innovation Center. / COURTESY R.I. Construction crews are continuing work on the new U.S. Post Office on the land where the former building was destroyed by fire more than a year ago. Exterior walls are now enclosing the wooden framework on the 9,200-square-foot structure, costing approximately $900,000 to $1 million to build, according to Jeff Piete of Jeff’s Home Improvement of North Smithfield – the project’s general contractor. O’Hearne Associates Architects of Burrillville is the architect. Construction began on the structure in December, with the summer being a target time frame for completion. Piete said there’s still a plethora of work needed to be done regarding the HVAC installation and building the post office to meet federal specifications. Once complete, the building will house Albion Food Mart and three townhouse-style apartments, along with the post office, Piete said. The Albion Social Club, which called the previous building home before the fire, will not be located in the new building, Piete said. / PBN PHOTO/JAMES BESSETTE[/caption]

Steel is being raised on the town’s new 22,000-square-foot police station, which will replace the current 1,515-square-foot station. Ground broke on the $8 million project – funded by a voter-approved bond issue from 2016 – last September and the work is expected to be finished by the end of October. Town Administrator Richard Rainer said bad weather resulted in the completion date being pushed back approximately one month. The demolition of the current station will immediately follow. The new headquarters will have facilities to accommodate the station’s entire workforce, additional holding cells, a large community room to be used for outreach or meetings, dispatch for both police and fire, a modern service bay with a lift to service vehicles, improved office space and a control center. Bentley Builders LLC of North Kingstown is the project’s general contractor, ABM Group LLC of Warwick is the project manager and Drummey Rosane Anderson Inc. of South Windsor, Conn., is the architect. / PBN PHOTO/JAMES BESSETTE[/caption]
