A broken back ended Kevin Davis’ skateboarding career.
But the injury also forced the Portsmouth native into a gym, igniting a new passion and the start of a career in personal training. A University of Massachusetts graduate with a degree in exercise science, along with a slew of industry certifications, Davis spent 15 years working as a personal trainer for various gyms on Aquidneck Island. In September, Davis struck out on his own with a mission to “put the personal back in personal training.”
Since launching Anchor Fitness LLC in Middletown, Davis has gained a small but loyal group of clients ranging from athletes to stay-at-home moms who flock to his one-on-one and group class offerings.
While the physical space was forced to close for several months amid the coronavirus pandemic, Davis maintained most of his clients, replacing in-person training sessions with those conducted over Zoom and gym equipment with bodyweight exercises.
A self-described “tactile trainer,” he was eager to resume in-person coaching, anticipating a surge in demand as stir-crazy residents seek new ways to get out and stay healthy. Personal training sessions start at $80 for one hour, and group classes cost $10 per class.
