Bag ban and straw bills removed from House committee agenda

PROVIDENCE – A statewide bag ban and restrictions on restaurant use of plastic straws will not become law this year, ecoRI News reported June 27.

House and Senate versions of a proposed ban on plastic-bag sales were amended just before the end of the legislative session to remove a mandatory 5-cent fee on paper bags, a provision supported by business groups as it would help them pay for the more-expensive paper bags versus plastic.

Both the bag and straw bills, which passed the Senate, were then removed from the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources agenda on June 26, the day of their scheduled hearings.

Larry Berman, House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello’s spokesman, told ecoRI News in an email “no consensus was reached, and the bills will not be further considered this year.”
