NEWPORT – A 6,660-square-foot seafood restaurant, designed by Steve Todisco and BKA Architects Inc., last week opened its doors on America’s Cup Avenue in Newport.
The second Barking Crab Restaurant – the first has been at 88 Sleeper St. in Boston since 1994 – was designed as a “more relevant and upscale” interpretation of the brand, “that would be suitable to use as a prototype as the company expands,” the design team said.

As well as a dining area, BKA and restaurant designer Todisco partnered to create lounge, bar and private dining sections in the former Seafares America Café building.
To create a “sense of age,” the architects say, they used “nicotine” yellow paint for the walls and a tin ceiling. The interior furnishings and “artifacts” were found at antique fairs and a boat is hung from the ceiling.
Todisco is a restaurant designer with Design Resources in Lynnfield, Mass. BKA Architects is based in Brockton, Mass. Noble Ventures Inc., of Raynham, Mass., served as general contractor for the project.
