BARRINGTON – A teacher in the town’s public school district will be allowed to return to work on Dec. 1 after being put on paid administrative leave over concerns related to social media activity the teacher allegedly made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to the district’s school committee. The teacher, whose name has not been disclosed, was placed on administrative leave at the beginning of September. School officials hired the investigator soon after. The private investigator, an attorney with expertise in First Amendment law, public school policy and employee conduct, concluded in their report that the teacher violated the district’s social media policy and was the cause of the disruption to the school district operations. The teacher will face disciplinary action from the district’s superintendent. The school committee would not comment on internal discipline, citing the issue in their official statement as “a personnel matter.” Kirk’s assassination set off similar situations across the country and raised safety concerns. “Over the past two months, Barrington Public Schools has experienced a level of national attention, online hostility and threats unlike anything in recent district history,” the school committee statement said. There will be increased police presence across the district and greater monitoring of inbound communications, the committee said. The district will be working closely with Barrington Police Department and through them, R.I. State Police and the FBI Providence field office. The school committee acknowledged that similarities could be drawn to terminations made three years ago during the COVID vaccine mandate period, but stated that none of the school committee members, administrators, or legal counsel from that point are still present. “What we cannot and will not do is allow outside political groups on any side of the spectrum to turn Barrington into a national pawn,” the statement said.
