PROVIDENCE – Beacon Communications has acquired The Reminder, a Coventry-based buyer’s guide publication of classifieds and adverts, the company announced Tuesday.
Beacon, which publishes the Warwick Beacon, Cranston Herald and Johnston Sun Rise newspapers, finalized the deal Thursday for an undisclosed amount, acquiring the business from siblings Peter Stevens and Amey Stevens Tilley.
The Reminder publishes 28,000 copies weekly and ships to 24,000 customers directly.
Beacon Publisher John Howell said in a statement he reassured the Reminder staff that business would continue as usual, but noted the company will engage in “bigger picture discussions” in the coming weeks.
Howell said apart from Stevens and Tilley, who will leave after helping the company through the leadership transition, the Reminder has a staff of five, not including part-time delivery workers, who will stay on with Beacon Communications. Howell said it is the company’s intention to retain the Reminder’s Coventry office as well.
“I have a real good feeling about the Beacon team,” Stevens said in a statement. “I think they’re honest, I trust that they will carry on what we have started. I think their heart is in the right place and that makes me feel good about it.”
Beacon Communications has a staff of 18.
“Here we are growing in what some people say is the death march of print,” said Howell.
