JOHNSTON – Block Island, Pawtucket and West Warwick will divide this year’s Most Improved Award from the R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation’s annual Most Improved municipal recycling competition, according to the RIRRC.
Each community will receive a third of the annual competition’s $25,000 top prize for achieving steady increases in recycling tonnage through innovative and aggressive solid-waste collection programs, the RIRRC’s Wendy Marchant told Providence Business News in an e-mail interview today.

Pawtucket credited the efforts of Recycling Coordinator Dennis Leach, who has been working closely all year with his RIRRC counterpart, Mike Mesolella.
The city’s $8,333.33 check will be accepted by Mayor James E. Doyle in a 10 a.m. ceremony Wednesday in the Pawtucket City Hall lobby. The money “will be used to further educate Pawtucket residents on the benefits of recycling and to purchase recycling equipment,” the mayor’s office said in a news release today.
The R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation, manager of the state Central Landfill in Johnston, was created by the General Assembly in 1974 to provide environmentally sound programs and facilities for managing solid waste generated in Rhode Island. Additional information is available at www.rirrc.org.
